We spent Tuesday night back in Norman OK, and Wednesday morning, had a group pow-wow. Under the circumstances of endless miserable blue skies, we voted to call it a wrap and head home. We drove up to OKC to meet the History Channel guys for final words and good-byes, then Randy and Sam took off south to TX. The rest of us continued north to Kansas City. Allan and Brian picked up their cars from storage, and then Allan, Chris, and Josh headed out for OH, MI, and MN. Brian and Nancy are spending Wednesday night near KC for an early morning departure. Nancy will grab a plane to NY, and Brian will head back to CO by car. So generally speaking, we got skunked by May this year. We did catch some photogenic storms on the first few days of the chase, put some respectable dents in Randy's new Hummer, cracked Mike's windshield, but the previous two years (9 tornadoes one year, 8 the next) made this year a little slow. On the days we did end up chasing, we are thankful for our four remote data assistants at Colorado State University. We got a lot of work done while out here, and represented our sponsors well, but with this irritating high pressure ridge infesting the central plains, we decided that the funding we had left would find a better purpose if we just called it a bad year, and ended our team outing a few days early. There's plenty left for the promised disaster relief fund, and we plan on making use of that during hurricane season. We always have fun, and we laughed longer and harder this year than any previous year. We're family, and we're all a little "left of center", which helped on those endless sunny days. We met a lot of wonderful people, including the television crew for the History Channel (Jason, Dave, Nick, and Diana)... who melded nicely into MESO madness and we genuinely enjoyed their company and time spent with us. The pranks were fast and furious, but harmless by nature. We fully intend to tell them about the shrimp we left in the back of their truck... in a few days. Or a week. Maybe two. Thank you all for riding along, and for the letters and messages of support sent. Next year will be our 10th anniversary chasing together as a team (we can barely believe it's been TEN YEARS!), and we're already planning something grand. To our friends in the chasing community, we'll see you all at the National Storm Chasers Convention this winter. To the rest of you, we'll resume our regular newsletters in June... after all, hurricane season starts June 1.
